Feb 06, 2009· The disadvantage to direct drive is that the motor limits access to the belt, like the Kalamazoo 2FSM shown above, where there is limited approach to the contact wheel from the left side. Most of the direct drive grinders I've seen are 2 wheel designs. A 3 wheel design, like the KMG & Burr King, almost always uses a belt driving the idler pulley.
