The results are presented of a recent coal dust particle size survey to determine the range of coal particles sizes found in dust samples collected from intake airways from 47 U.S. coal mines in MSHA's ten bituminous coal mine health and safety districts (see figure 1).

Thirteen coals were used in this study covering a wide range of coal rank. Six were from North America (USA) and the remainder from China (CN), the UK, South Africa (SA) and Vietnam (VNM). All coal samples were supplied in pulverised form, typically 75% passing through a 75 l m screen. Table 1 shows the basic coal characteristics.
