The Outotec Flash Smelting Process is one of the world's most commonly used processes for the production of primary copper and nickel. The process is based on our flash smelting principle, which utilizes the internal energy of the feed material for smelting, minimizing the need for external fuel and making the process very energy efficient.

Feed materials for direct-to-blister smelting furnace mainly contain chalcocite (Cu 2 S) and bornite (Cu 5 FeS 4) . The quality of copper produced in flash smelting furnace is defined by its lead content, which should be below 0.3% for the product to conform to blister copper quality requirements.

A copper flash smelting process in which part of a sulfidic copper feed is roasted in the presence of a calcareous SO 2 scavenger to produce a calcine containing calcium sulfate and an oxidic copper product, the calcine is mixed with additional feed and the mixture is flash smelted to provide a metallic product and a calcareous slag.

At Outotec we are very proud to have been part of this successful smelter project. In addition to the technical program in Głogów, KGHM hosted the delegates to a gala dinner at the near-by town of Legnica. The Głogów tour and the entire Flash Smelting Congress were once again an unforgettable experience for the Flash Smelting Family.

In the Kennecott-Outotec® Flash Converting Process, the dry matte from smelting is processed under highly oxidizing conditions so that the sulfide matte converts to blister .

Inco flash smelting mixes dried concentrate and flux with oxygen and blows it horizontally into a hot furnace. Otherwise, the processes are similar. Outotec flash smelting (seven Ni smelting furnaces worldwide) accounts for about 70% of Ni flash smelting [29]. Inco flash smelting (two furnaces, one smelter worldwide) accounts for ~ 30% [29].

Circofer coal-based reduction - Outotec. outotec circofer coal-based reduction. Based on over 60 years of experience in fluidized bed technology, Outotec has developed the Circofer coal-based process which produces pre-reduced feed material for smelting reduction reactors, such as AusIron, or electric smelting furnaces - the final product being hot metal or pig iron.

The original patented process was named solid matte oxygen converting which was renamed Kennecott-Outokumpu (Kennecott-Outotec) Flash Converting. Many of the lessons Outokumpu had learned from development of the then new Outokumpu Direct-to-Blister process could be used because of the metallurgical similarity of the two processes.
