Lochaline Silica Sand Mine is the only underground silica sand mine in the UK and extracts silica of 99.8% purity from a five metre sequence. The sand is used for the manufacture of high quality glass for optical and other purposes. Although the sand has been known about since the nineteenth century, the mine only opened in 1940.

Lochaline is world famous for its white silica sand which is mined and exported all over the UK for making high grade glass. The mine, which employs a dozen or so people, is a major contributor to the local economy. During the war sand from Lochaline was used by the military in the manufacturing of bomb sights and submarine periscopes.

Lochaline was first mentioned as a potential source of silica sand in 1895, when a vast deposit of white cretaceous sandstone running inland from Lochaline shore was reported. In 1923 the Edinburgh Geological Survey analysed a sandstone sample. It proved to be one of the purest deposits in the world.

Geology. There has been a silica sand mine in Lochaline since 1940 when it was opened to replace sources of silica lost because of World War II. A source was needed for the manufacture of optical quality glass.It was announced in November 2008 that the mine would be closing. In October 2011 it was announced that the mine would re-open in 2012 under a new company.

There are two products of silica sand sold from Lochaline mine – LQS85 and LQS500 – with one having a higher iron content. The sand is used for various end products including glass used in lenses, whisky bottles and windows but Veronique said: 'We recently supplied sand to film studios so maybe famous movie stars have frolicked in it!'
