All 84 of the country's coal-fired power plants will be shut down over the 19-year time frame, a government-appointed commission announced Saturday, according to The Los Angeles Times.

The last remaining coal-fired power plant in the Uniper portfolio in Germany will be the Datteln 4 power plant which is presently connected to the electricity grid undergoing final testing. It is one of the most modern coal power plants and part of Uniper's strategy to reduce the company's CO2 emissions.

The Coal Phase-Out Act mandates that by 2022, the power generated from both anthracite (hard coal) and lignite (brown coal) must be reduced to around 15 gigawatts (GW) each.
