One of its earlier initiatives was the Oman Mining Company (OMCO), launched in 1979 to exploit three copper deposits in the region of Sohar close to the north-east coast. In addition to the mine, the company constructed concentrator, smelting and refining facilities at the site capable of producing 20,000 metric tons of copper a year.
The mountains of Oman are rich in mineral deposits. Copper ore is being mined in the northern Oman. The ore is processed into electrolytically refined copper cathodes for export. Gold and silver are produced as by-products for export. The Sultanate has also started mining chromite and exporting since early 80's.
The sultanate produces copper, chromite, gold, and silver. Oman's main copper reserves are in the Suhar area on the Al Batinah coast. The processing of ore at the Suhar complex, operated by the government-owned Oman Mining Company, began in 1983. The production of chromite by the Oman Mining Company also began in 1983 in the Suhar area.
